Healthcare

Why Healthcare

Nyanza Province is a region steeped in rich cultural heritage and vibrant community life, the challenge of last-mile healthcare delivery looms large. With a population exceeding of approximately 6.7 Million, the intricate tapestry of geospatial diversity adds another layer of complexity to the accessibility and availability of healthcare services, particularly in remote villages. At one time, the province had the highest HIV prevalence rate in Kenya, a significant burden of malarial disease and among the lowest life expectancies in the country. Over 50% of the Household economies are largely supported by subsistence farming and fishing along the shores of Lake Victoria, yet the healthcare infrastructure in these areas remains disproportionately scarce. The majority of the population while grappling with the exigencies of daily survival, often prioritize immediate needs over healthcare, perpetuating a cycle of uneven distribution and limited awareness of available services.

What we do

AECA’s comprehensive and community-centric health programme takes primary healthcare services to the doorsteps of underserved communities in Homabay, Migori and Siaya Counties of the greater Nyanza Region. Following a two pronged approach, the programme provides curative as well as preventive services, addressing the gaps in availability, accessibility and affordability of healthcare.

Stories Of Change

Michael Otieno

Both my parents died of HIV when I was just 5 years old. I also inherited the virus from my mother. I became so sickly that at class three I barely went to school. A community care giver linked me up with AECA.I was soon enrolled on the right medication therapy and today I am healthy and recording good grades in school.

I am a 42, year old mother of 7.I lost my husband to HIV/AIDS four years ago. All my children and myself are also HIV positive. When we fell sick, we believed we were bewitched. We remained in denial until two of my children died too. The staff at AECA approached me.We were counselled and enrolled on anti-retroviral therapy. Today we’re healthy and living fulfilling lives.

I lost all my 4 sons to HIV/AIDS. At the age of 75, I was forced to take care of my grandchildren all alone. My husband also died few years ago. The staff at AECA came to my home after hearing my story. Today I can smile again. All my grandchildren are sponsored through schools and enrolled on anti-retroviral therapies.
